9 inspiring animals that use prosthetics
Prosthetics help people regain their mobility. But they don’t only help people. Also animals can regain their mobility with some nifty prosthetics.
This site shows different ways prosthetics can extend life of some animals.
Among the most inspiring stories involving an animal prosthesis is the story of Cassidy the dog. Cassidy was originally found living in the streets — mangy, bony and apparently abandoned and with only three legs. A local shelter put him up for adoption, and he eventually found a home with Steve and Susan Posovsky, who made it their quest to give Cassidy a good life — including an artificial leg.
Pioneered by Dr. Denis Marcellin-Little, an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Cassidy’s prosthetic is so advanced that the scientists who worked on him are hoping the technique might someday be used on humans.
Today, Cassidy has made a full recovery and is able to walk for hours with his new leg (including regular trips to the beach)!
